why would anyone want an unlocked cell phone?

I’m curious as to what a unlocked cell phone offers you that a locked cell doesn’t? and how do you get one unlocked if you want to?

u cant set ur security options with a locked phone…let alone probably access anything else…

well.. an ‘unlocked’ cell phone allows you to use a phone that is meant for one service provider and use it with another company.

i honestly dont know how to do it…i DO it’s a hacking skill and most likely illegal

want an unlocked phone? go to ebay!

An unlocked cell phone can be used on any carrier that has the same network design as the cell phone requires. For instance, the iPhone usually only functions on AT&T, but if it were unlocked, you would be able to use it on Sprint also, because they use the same network type.

you can use an unlock phone with any carrier as long as you have a sim card, so if you like a particular phone and your company doesnt offer it you have choices. You can get them unlocked at most cell places now.

I have an unlocked apple phone from AT&T and i use it in Canada, no its not illegal

when you get an unlocked phone you are able to use it for any company. Like buying and unlocked itouch which is used at at&t could be used for sprint

cell phone may only work with ertain carriers and are said to be locked.Like an I phone will only work with AT&T. If you can unlock the phone then you an put your SIM chip in it from another carrier and use it like say t-mobile

You can use an unlocked cellphone in different countries and different providers. For example: An iPhone is locked for use only with ATT here in the US. If you have an unlocked one, you can use with T-Mobile, which uses the same technology as ATT. Also, if you go overseas, you can use your iPhone with the local providers there (with a different number) instead of going roaming and paying tons per minute.

i can answer the first part of the question
people want unlocked cellphones cause they can use them in other networks.
for example if i am a tmobile comsumer and i want an iphone so bad and i dont wanna switch to att i would have to buy an unlocked iphone so i can still use it with my tmobile network by using the same sim card.
idk how people unlock them though

Hello,

unlocking a phone is not illegal like others suggested. In fact, the only country in the world that even has LOCKED phones is the USA and last year several phone carriers were taken to court and the decision has not been made yet whether it is even legal for carriers to provide LOCKED phones to consumers and bind them to yearly contracts.

People purchase unlocked phones when they want to use a phone with different carriers and also use it around the works when they travel. All they need to do is insert a different sim card and thats it. There is nothing that needs to be done in order to use the phone in a different country except changing a sim card.

Also, many USA carriers require you to extend your contract for at least one more year if you upgrade your phone. Some people are hesitant in extending the contract and, so, they buy an unlocked phone (not from the carrier) and just place their carriers sim card in the phone.

Most phones that are sold as "unlocked" on the internet and on Ebay are from outside the USA and were never locked to begin with. All phones from overseas (UK, Europe, Asia, etc…) are already unlocked (even from their carriers).

There are services and companies that will unlock your locked USA phone if you need to.
