I’ve read on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7-Eleven_Speak_Out_Wireless) that 7-Eleven Speak Out Wireless sells unlocked GSM cellphones for their prepaid wireless service. Can anyone confirm that? And what about Petro-Canada Mobility? It seems that these two services offer the exact same handsets, so is it possible that they too are selling unlocked phones?

i was thinking of buying a cellphone from one of this places and they say that my sim card (from my razer) can be used in another phone…like a nokia phone that i was looking at. thanks

Yep. know a little here. The beauty of GSM is the SIM card (TDMA and some others don’t have this). The SIM card is your actual account and it can be used in any GSM type phone (which is most of them). Just take it out of one and pop it in another.

Just one little hitch. Phones can be locked so they only work with one carrier. This keeps people from taking there 9.95 phone frpm say Verizon, and using it on their new Cingular account. The phone didn’t cost your provider 9.95, it cost them more like a $100 (maybe $500 for a real upper end phone) and it’s heavily subsidized by the service provider. So they like to lock them so that people can’t take the phones that they helped pay for over to another competitor.

So if your taking a new phone, it either has to be un-locked, or else from the same carrier as your account is with.

Oh, and yes, the SIM card from the Razr will fir the Nokia, you just need to be sure the Nokia is from the same service provider you have your contract with.

i have been thinking of buying the nokia n95, an unlocked one. was planning on using a sim card from another country so that they will be able to text me in an affordable way for them. i have the iphone right now and its only at at&t. so, i can`t use other sim cards. hope somebody out there knows about this kind of stuff and will answer my question. thanks….

Yes, they do work. I have an unlocked HTC Touch that was made for the European market and use it with an AT&T sim card – all the text messaging, mms and internet work on it but it did take some setup first. Fortunately, all the info you need for that setup is on the AT&T wireless web site

Is it possible to use a Sidekick LX with AT&T if it is unlocked? Also wat will be available to use if i only use it on the AT&T plan. I have heard both sides. That you can have it all or only text and talk. Also i need to know how do you unlock a phone? can you just put in the other SIM card?

You would need to get the unlock code and instructions from the carrier that the device was made for. The only thing we can guarantee with an unlocked device is that it will make and receive calls. We can usually get text messaging working without too much trouble. Everything else that is data related is a crap shoot. We may be able to get one thing working and not another or we may not be able to get anything data related working. Case in point – I received a call from a person yesterday who had a European model of an LG device and we started going thru the WAP settings but it would not allow him to edit the APN or the IP address and without those the internet will not work. We were not able to help him any further.

me too had this question on my mind last year, what i did was bought a smart phone from E bay and i my self unlocked it at my home using unlock codes, which in my presumption is the easiest and economical of all methods, if u feel any qualms about unlocking try using http://www.mobileunlockguide.com/ to glance through the entire process of unlocking before actually procuring codes

They have to be mp3 compatible and under 100 dollars any suggestions? Ebay doesn’t count.

dont just enter unlock codes or u will permentaly lock the phone goole search the phone id its like wear the sim card is or comes with the manuel enter it and eventually so guy will send u one

eBay-Pretty risky, but it should say unlocked in the description. I’m getting my enV from there and getting it in a few days. And make sure you check feedback about the person that you plan on getting it from!

My birthday is coming up this week and i am planning to use my money for a new cellphone. I have T-mobile.

So i have to do is just take out my SIM card out of my old cell phone, put it into the new cellphone and everything should be just fine? Will i have the same phone number, plan, contacts? I am planning to buy a Sony Ericsson cellphone off ebay, amazon, or from their home page.

Assuming the unlocked phone works on GSM network, you should just be able to pop your t-mobile sim card in the phone. It should work. Some features may not be available though. Like Internet may not work or picture messaging. Yes, you will have the same phone number, plan and contacts. Just transfer the contacts onto the unlocked phone. You should get the phone off of amazon. Amazon is pretty good & reliable.
