I am thinking of buying a tri-band unlocked phone, but do not know which carrier will alllow me to use it with their service (i.e. at&t verizon, tmobile) I would like to sign up with verizon but know they work on an old network? Does anyone know? I am looking at buying the Samsung SGH-U700 Metallic Silver…
Any carrier will work with unlocked cell phones. All you have to do is go to them choose a plan (you can cancel it at any time) and they will give you a Sim card to put in you cell phone and it will work. Good Luck

Are there any nationwide retail stores that have a wide selection of unlocked cell phones. are there any of those stores in the Bellevue, Washington or Seattle area. Also are there any smaller stores in that area that carry unlocked cell phones
eBay sells unlocked phones.
I currently have an ATT plan grandfathered over to Cingular, and because the plan is so good I don’t want to switch to Cingular. With that said, I have an older phone and want a new one. Every person I speak with at Cingular tells me I need to migrate over in order to purchase a new phone that is compatible. I have spoken to several "independent" resellers who say an unlocked phone is the way to go and proceed to tell me it will cost close to $300. Does anyone know of a store or site I can take a look at to shop for a new phone at a drastically lower cost?
do not trust ebay for unlocked phones i have dealt with cell phones too long and people on ebay don’t even know what they are selling half of the time. The best site for unlocked cellphones is Amazon.com amazon checks with their sellers and stuff and it sounds bad but when it comes to cell phones european people know what they are talking about. Also come another I believe my cingular fried has told me not next year but year after if you don’t have the new phones your screwed see your old phone works off an older transmission system where cingular is switching to GSM which is what is used in europe GSM is good no feeback like CDMA but they are switching from the analog and i believe ATT was IDEN but do not quote me on that and as towers switch to GSM their will go your service it is just a matter of time. Good luck
I want to know if anyone can tell me a good place to buy cheap unlocked cell phones. Thank you
Depends where you’re at actually. If you’re situated in Asia, there are thousands of mobile phone shops you can choose from that sell unlocked celphones at very competetive prices. Same as in Europe. The advantage of these places I mentioned is that the availability of cutting edge, unlocked phones are limitless and you can easily find the phone to fit your needs. If you live in the United States your best option would be to shop online and hope that you get your money’s worth. There are alot of nimrod online sellers out there so be very careful with your purchase. If you’re going to get yourself an unlocked mobile I would suggest taking a look at the latest offerings from Sony-Ericsson and/or Nokia.
Hi,
If I bought an unlocked cell phone to use on T-Mobile, would it have problems connecting to the service? Or problems using the internet?
Thanks.
should be no problems at all. so long as they unlocked it so you can connect to the server, and after that you should be right to go

I am looking to upgrade my cell phone to a Sony Ericsson s500i. I have a plan through Cincinnati Bell, and they do carry this phone. I just need to know that if a phone is unlocked will it work with any provider? Cincinnati Bell is a smaller cell company, that’s why I’m concerned.
I do have a sim card with Cinci Bell…
Cincinnati Bell is indeed a GSM company, though smaller… Yes it will work! I can’t guarantee strong signal but yes it will work.
Wow I’m impressed S500i for 130, and no contract! Jealous… It’s at least 200 the cheapest i can find @ stores
Since you don’t have to make a commitment, maybe you can buy the phone and use their service for about a month or so, if it’s really weak then go on e-bay and unlock it. They have people that you give ur IMEI to and they find your unlock code. I’m not sure if CB locks their phones tho…
What does "UNLOCKED cell phone" really means? If you buy unlocked cell phone from someone or a company then can you use it in any Cell Phone Company Plan?
Most unlocked phones can be used with almost any cell phone plan, but there are the occasional few that will only work with certain plans. Unlocked just means it was unlocked from a specific network so that it can be used with other networks. For example if you buy a phone locked to Cingular, you can get an unlock code so that the phone can also be used with T-Mobile, Verizon, etc. But you have to be careful with using an unlocked phone for a plan it wasn’t originally made for, because you might not be able to use certain network features such as text messaging or internet browsing. I have a Cingular plan, & at one point I bought a Blackberry that wasn’t a model Cingular ever carried. I could make/receive calls, but could not use text messaging or internet.
We are traveling from LA to Guatemala–we have regular US cell phones have an unlocked phone we purchased in Thailand–over there we just had cards inserted as we traveled. Just curious which works in central America!
It is much simpler to buy a cheap phone, once you arrive in Guatemala. They are inexpensive.
